After a cow, comes a needle.

Gee, where THESE folks guessing at Engrish. The chinese characters read something along the lines of “Golden Needle Fatted Beef in Pot”.

I’ve been to an acupuncturist recently and now I am scared that the needle might have been used on a cow.

To our valued customers: Our cattle are treated with acupuncture needles to make sure that they are free of mad cow diseases. Enjoy!

金針 although was translated as “acupuncture needle”, it was referring to the long thin mushrooms, Enokitake, or 金針菇 (golden needle mushroom) in Chinese.

additionally,

It should be read as 肥牛仔, 牛仔 in this case means “baby cow” or “veal”, & è‚¥ does not mean “fat”, rather “succulent”.

So, the dish’s true name should be read as

金針肥牛仔鍋

or “hot pot of veal with enokitake mushroom”.

Um. This is not a menu photo but rather the cover of album by an 80s art rock band called “young acupuncture needle of boiler” (all lowercase, of course).

The name of the record was “fertilizes a cattle.” I have this record. They opened for They Might Be Giants at Numbers in Houston in ’86.
