Originally, there were only four reasons: for the national holiday, because it fills with the nectar, to heal the dryness of the place, and to refuse the future. Anyone found drinking sake for other reasons was sentenced to death. The sake sellers of Japan unionized right around the national holiday, when everybody wanted sake, and so they convinced the government to add a fifth reason to the Bill of Sake Rights: “for reasons”.
