BTW. Pro bono publico = for the public good, or the good of the people.

It is only a convention in our society that it refers to “free” work performed by the legal practitioners.
I often wonder why other professions, are not expected to perform free work. Say for instance – architects expected to design public housing, pro bono.

Or perhaps, politicians donate time, to $hit you to death for nothing.

WAIT!! They already do that.

Marum, Perhaps lawyers are expected to donate their time because so much of the need for their work is created by the government. Or because poor people often need a lawyer, but never need an architect. They also need medical care regardless of their ability to pay, and even if doctors and hospitals don’t explicitly do pro bono work, they understand that some bills can’t be collected.
